Sometimes, weird connections emerge. Especially when it occurs between two cultural things I find interesting. But I am not that surprised, today is full of interesting cross over. Tonight's connections is between JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye (which is one of my favorite book) and Mamoru Oshii's anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (a cyberpunk techno-centered universe full of skyscrapers which is also happen to like). I found it on salinger.org:
JD Salinger's works, especially The Catcher in the Rye and Laughing Man, are at the center of an anime series called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, by Production IG, draws heavily on JD Salinger in many places. Quotes from The Catcher in the Rye are scattered throughout the series, and there is also a strong theme of fighting hypocrisy. In addition, the most significant story arc of the anime is that of the "Laughing Man" case, which the characters within the series realize has a connection to JD Salinger's short story of the same title. Since it is anime, there is little if any English to be enjoyed - much less any discussion of Western thought - but it may be worth watching for a hardcore Salinger fan.
